Traffic-calming measures to be installed where teenager was killed by speeding driver after months of campaigning

A series of traffic-calming measures are set to be installed where a teenage girl was killed after being hit by a speeding driver.

Mia Strothers, 14, was struck by a BMW as she crossed Lightbowne Road in Moston on October 5 this year, as she made her way to school.

A 45-year-old man has since admitted causing the youngster's death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene and driving without a licence.

Following the tragedy, her heartbroken family and members of the local community have come together to start the campaign 'Justice 4 Mia.'

Since Mia's death, the group have staged a series of protests in a bid to get traffic-calming measures installed along the busy stretch of road.

Manchester council have since agreed to implement a 20mph zone on Lightbowne Road, and upgrade the pedestrian facilities at the junction of Lightbowne Road and Nuthurst Road.

A zebra crossing will also be installed at the entrances to Broadhurst Park and to the north of Broadhurst Community Centre.

Mia's family say they would like to see a speed camera along Lightbowne Road, but are so far happy with the result of their campaigning.

"We are still broken. Mia was a beautiful young lady and we are just trying to good in her name because that's what she deserves," Mia's uncle, Paul Orman said.

"We hope that these traffic-calming measures mean that what happened to Mia won't happen to another family.

"Mia would have wanted something good to have come of this situation - she never saw the bad in anybody."

Manchester council conducted a consultation with the local community throughout November, with work having commenced on November 23.

The installation of new signs, road markings and bollards, plus a traffic order in place to establish the new 20mph zone, was due to be completed by mid-December.

New zebra crossings are set for installation by the end of December 2020, while the upgrade of signals and pedestrian facilities for the junction of Lightbowne Road and Nuthurst Road is due for completion by the end of March 2021.

Mia's family say they are still in talks with Manchester council about the implementation of speed cameras.

The Justice 4 Mia campaign has also gone on to raise £3,000 for Manchester Children's Hospital, with more fundraising events planned for 2021.

Manchester council’s Executive Member for the Environment, Planning and Transport, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: "I would like to thank everyone who provided their feedback on the draft traffic-calming plans for Lightbowne Road, which were put forward after discussions took place with Mia’s family.

"The important feedback received from the community has helped to shape the final plan, which we are now in the process of carrying out."
