Traffic builds on the A52 Clifton Bridge - despite recent lockdown restrictions

Traffic is reportedly queuing on the A52 Clifton Bridge - despite recent lockdown restrictions.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, there is congestion on the southbound carriageway, from Middleton Boulevard to the A453 Clifton Lane (Silverdale Island).

Traffic is congested in the roadworks area - and is slow through the lane closures towards Remembrance Way.

It's been seven months since the road was closed on February 6 after corroded steel cables were discovered during an inspection.

Only one lane has remained open while engineers conduct repairs on the bridge.

The closures caused some of the worst traffic levels ever seen with the city, at one point becoming the most congested in the world.

Highways England engineers had opened a second lane for light vehicles, due to a weight restriction, but this was almost immediately closed again as larger vehicles ignored the warning signs.

Last month, however, officials said there were plans to reopen more lanes again in November.

The congestion comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the latest coronavirus lockdown restrictions, encouraging people to work from home where possible and introducing a 10pm closing time for restaurants, pubs and bars.
