Traffic brought to 'standstill' in Newport city centre due to pigeon rescue

Newport city centre was brought to a standstill tonight after fire and rescue teams were called to rescue a pigeon.

Emergency services were called to High Street in Newport , after receiving reports that a bird had become stuck on a building spike.

Firefighters and the RSPCA were able to rescue the pigeon using a ladder, causing traffic to come to a halt at around 6.50pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Pictures from the scene show a bird hanging above the Tiny Rebel bar on the street.

The Welsh TV host told she was 'too fat' now making name for herself

Sam Dabb, who runs Le Pub on High Street, Newport, said: "The traffic was building to the roundabout and I went to see what it was. The pigeon was outside Tiny Rebel.

"The fire engine was blocking the road."

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: "Crews have been to High Street in Newport where there was a pigeon stuck on a spike on a building.

"Crews released the pigeon using a ladder and small tools. The RSPCA were in attendance and we have left the scene."
