Traffic at a standstill as cops arrest half naked man on Princes Street

A half-naked man led police officers on a merry dance through Edinburgh’s streets yesterday afternoon before they were finally able to capture and arrest him.

Traffic backed up as the man, wearing only a pair of shorts, skipped back and forth across Lothian Road - even running over the tops of cars to evade the group of three police officers trying to catch him.

In a video taken at the scene officers can be seen trying to keep up with the man but he repeatedly gets away from them.

Witnesses described hearing shouting just before the incident, which took place shortly after 2pm at the junction of Princes Street, Lothian Road, and Shandwick Place.

The man was eventually wrestled to the ground by four officers outside the Caledonian Hotel on Princes Street – witnesses reported seeing four police vans at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1.55pm on Thursday, 25 June, 2020, officers were called to Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, following reports of a disturbance.

“A man has been arrested in connection and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a precaution."
