
Two oxen collide head-on Sunday at a traditional bullfight in the Yamakoshi district of Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, held as a special event to commemorate the Emperor's abdication on Tuesday. Vigorous bullfights were performed in the event, called Ushi no Tsuno-tsuki (oxen horn-butting), an important intangible folk cultural asset. The special event was organized in thanks to the Emperor and Empress, who encouraged residents in and around the district hit by the Niigata Prefecture Chuetsu Earthquake, which occurred in October 2004.
