Trading up, trading down – in pictures

keston trading up trading down
Trading up: Kent. This modern four-bedroom house in Keston has a garden stretching 170 feet almost entirely laid out to lawn. The potential for a keen gardener is enormous, which must surely be unusual this close to London. The inside of the house is clean-cut and light, with three reception rooms and bathrooms and a 20-foot kitchen cum breakfast room. It’s on the market for £600,000.

Surrey trading up trading down
Trading up: Surrey. Apparently this gorgeous Victorian four-double bedder has only had five owners in its 120 years. Thankfully the current one has only shown extreme decorative tastes in two of the rooms, and the rest looks in great order, especially the large kitchen/breakfast room. The house, which is priced at £599,950, boasts four reception rooms, including an extended living room, while outside is a large and secure garden.

Leeds trading up trading down
Trading up: Leeds. This handsome detached home has five bedrooms and three reception rooms but the vendor is asking for offers over £300,000, which for some would make it an option for trading down. The new owner will probably want to redecorate throughout and replace the rather eighties-style pine kitchen, but the red Aga is totally desirable. There is also a generous and private back garden.

painswick trading up trading down
Trading down: Gloucestershire. We love the windows in front of the kitchen sink and hob, overlooking the pretty courtyard garden in this three- (or four depending how you use the rooms) bedroom Cotswold stone cottage. The semi-detached cottage is believed to date back to the 15th century and has lots of period features, including a William and Mary stone fireplace, eaved rooms, window seats and the inevitable exposed timbers. It’s in Painswick and on the market for £300,000.

Suffolk trading up trading down
Trading down: Suffolk. Location, location, location – Kirstie and Phil would love this property as it ticks all three very important boxes. The Pink House has open fields to the rear and views over Burgate’s Great Green at the front. For a three-bedroom cottage, it is quite spacious too. The rooms are generously proportioned and there’s nothing for the new owners to do apart form putting their stamp on it: the cottage has been recently rewired, replumbed, redecorated and rekitchened and rebathroomed. Cost: £300,000.

bath trading up trading down
Trading down: Bath. It’s the first time this old worker’s cottage has been put up for sale and it needs quite a bit of renovating, hence the £150,000 price tag. The layout is also slightly unusual, with the kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor, living room on the first floor and the one bedroom on the second floor. But it has a long garden running down to a river at the front and there's no chain.
