Trading up: Gloucestershire. The nuns of the Order of Poor Clares in Woodchester might be, er … poor, but they've enjoyed a stunning home for the past couple of centuries. Following the order’s decision to relocate from this 17th-century, grade II-listed convent set in 26 acres to Devon, the Clifton diocese has put it on the market for £2.25m. The agent suggests it could be put to several uses, including as a hotel, a training centre, a residential institution or as straightforward residential.

Trading up: Leicestershire. Trading up: West Yorkshire. Trading down: County Durham. The inside of the Old School House in Birtley, Chester Le Street, looks like it needs a bit of work doing, including new carpets, but it wouldn’t take too much to return this charismatic property to its former glory. It has two receptions and either three bedrooms and a study, or four bedrooms, as well as a resonably-sized kitchen, all for £200,000.
