Trading up: Kent. The Georgians grafted the front of this £395,000 three-bedroom house in Deal on to an older core, and the good looks of it and its neighbours are protected by conservation status. The large walled garden belies its town centre location. Buyers with more modern tastes may wish to get to grips with the decor and will dislike the trek to the bathroom through the kitchen and rear hall.

Trading down: Devon. The balcony and the sitting room bay window overlook the harbour in the pretty resort of Brixham. Trading down: London. When completed in 1960 the Brandon Estate in the borough of Southwark was deemed a model for social housing and a Henry Moore sculpture in the surrounding greenery seals its status. The £190,000 price tag for a two-bedroom flat with a full-length balcony overlooking Kennington Park and the London skyline is a bargain. It’s been handsomely decorated and has use of a residents’ car park.
