Trading up, trading down

Trading up: Yorkshire. This 17th-century manor house guards Bainbridge village green in the midst of the Dales, and you can gaze across Wensleydale from the mullioned windows. Internally your horizons may be narrow, but when you tire of your usual postcode you can take house and home on holiday with you along Europe’s waterways. Trading down: Devon. A miniature remnant of Georgiana in the centre of Kingsbridge, and just a short stroll to the Salcombe estuary. Bargain of the week: Northamptonshire. The small frontage conceals a large secret: four bedrooms, two reception rooms and a cellar lurk behind it. It’s in the Semilong district of Northampton and would ordinarily market for around £215,000, but the owners need a quick sale so will accept offers of £187,500. For that you get period glamour: four fireplaces, a tiled hall and dado rails, and a glass door opens the kitchen/breakfast room on to a professionally landscaped garden.
