Trading Standards warns 'fake' LOL Surprise dolls contain chemicals which harm children

If your child has this LOL Surprise doll then get rid of the toy as soon as possible.

The European Commission and Trading Standards have issued product recall notices for 'LOL Surprise Electric Princess Dolls', as the plastic contains dangerously high levels of 2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), which can harm children's reproductive health systems, Trading Standards says. The high levels of DEHP mean the Chinese-made dolls do not comply with European chemical regulations.

The doll, which is sold with accessories, has been removed from sale by retailers. LOL Surprise say the dolls are not official products, but are counterfeit toys which illegally use the LOL Surprise brand name, Grimsby Live reports.

Trading Standards has issued a ' serious' alert to warn parents about the dangerous dolls.

If you have any of the affected dolls, dispose of the toys and at the very least make sure your child does not come into contact with them, as the chemicals in the plastic are dangerous. Approach the retailer you bought the product from for a refund.

What is 2-ethylhexyl phthalate?

2-ethylhexyl phthalate is an organic compound and is the most common member of the class of phthalates, which are used as plasticizers.

Researchers have linked phthalates to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes and low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues.

It has also been linked with behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues.

A LOL Surprise spokesperson said this is an illegal product which has not been produced by LOL Surprise, but by others using their copyrighted name.
