Trading for Kyle Allen is a great move for the Redskins roster

The Washington Redskins have reportedly traded a fifth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers in order to get quarterback Kyle Allen back with his former coach in Washington.

What do we think of this trade?

At first thought, it makes a ton of sense for the Redskins. Allen had a solid year in 2019, playing for an injured Cam Newton. In 12 starts, he went 5-7 while throwing for 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. There were times where it seemed that the Panthers might have found a QB with which they could enter the future with, but a brutal end to the season saw those dreams fade away.

Regardless, though, we know that Allen has the talent to be a solid QB in the NFL, and he will now be back with some familiar faces in D.C. that followed Rivera to his new team. Most importantly, Scott Turner is now running the offense, and he worked closely with Allen in his first two years in the NFL.

This move also does very well to shore up one of the Redskins’ most glaring needs in free agency. With Case Keenum and Colt McCoy on new teams, Washington didn’t have many options to back up Dwayne Haskins. This will also help Rivera fulfill his promise to create a ‘very competitive’ quarterback competition in pre-season camp this year. Allen has more experience, of course, but it’s fairly accurate to say that they are relatively close to each other as far as production goes. Haskins has a higher upside, but we’ve seen what Allen can do on the field. It will be fun to watch these two battle it out.
