Trading for Joe Flacco gives Broncos flexibility in 2019 NFL draft

Before the Denver Broncos agreed to trade for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, many fans and NFL pundits expected the team would select a QB with the 10th overall pick in April’s draft.

The Broncos may still select a QB — in the first round or later — but the team no longer needs to add a QB. Acquiring Flacco gives the team flexibility in the draft to select the best player available.

With quarterback no longer a glaring need, Denver could afford to select linebacker Devin White or cornerback Greedy Williams, if one of them is available. QB Drew Lock probably won’t be a popular pick for the Broncos in mock drafts anymore — and speculation that the team could trade up for him will likely die down.

Flacco is 34 years old, so Denver may still consider drafting a QB to groom behind him. With a better QB class in 2020, though, the Broncos might be wise to wait another year to draft one early.
