Trading down could mean Cardinals miss out on ‘blue chip-type players’

We have reached the point leading up to the draft where almost all possible scenarios have played out. For the Arizona Cardinals, now it seems possible trade scenarios are being discussed. Three teams — the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons — are all possibly looking to move into the top 10.

The Cardinals do not have a second-round pick because of the trade for DeAndre Hopkins.

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim is not ruling anything out, saying they could trade back and have even had conversations about the possibility of moving up for a player they covet.

However, they lack the draft capital to do much in terms of moving up. Then there is this that Keim said when he spoke to reporters in a video conference this week.

“There are definitely about eight to 10 guys that I think are certainly blue chip-type players,” he said.

At No. 8 overall, they are guaranteed to get one of those players. If they move down to the 14-16 range where the Bucs, Broncos and Falcons are, they might be able to get a second-round pick, but they very likely lose out on all their blue-chip prospects.

Instead of a potentially great player, they could settle for a couple of pretty good players.

The question then becomes this — will having two pretty good players who could be great have more of a lasting impact on the team than having one player they believe will be great or even elite?

That is why trading down where the Cardinals are is both intriguing and dangerous.
