Trade Talk: All eyes on Luv Ranjan’s Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor rom-com

Have you noticed? Every once in a while a love story comes along to break the clutter of action and comedy films. In the late 1990s when Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, followed by Sanjay Dutt and Sunny Deol were creating havoc on screen with their bloodshot jibes at vendetta, Mahesh Bhatt’s Aashiqui, Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya and Mansoor Ali Khan’s Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak came along to soothe frayed nerves.

Luv Ranjan’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar gives off the same assuaging vibes. It comes after a torrent of action, comedy and drama. Its USP is its strategic advantage. It is a one-of-its-kind romcom, sassy and saucy, not seen in recent times.

It’s been a while since we saw a genuine boy-meets-girl tell-tale and let’s face it: Ranbir seems to share much better screen-chemistry with Shraddha than with Alia in Brahmastra. Ranbir has been fiercely promoting the film sharing endearing details on his new love, daughter Raha. But a resonant rapport with the crowds does not always translate into footfalls. Kartik Aaryan learnt this the hard way after Shehzada.

With Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar (less tongue-twisting title than Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety) scheduled for a massive Holi release on March 8, the movie theatres are looking at an ultra-bleak weekend.

Exhibitor Roshan Singh says it is a tough time for the cinema business. “Not just tough, the toughest ever. This weekend movie theatres have nothing to run in Bihar so we are re-releasing Kangana Ranaut’s Queen and other old hits.”

For those who are content with their movie-viewing experience at home director Rahul V Chittella’s weepie is strongly recommended. Although Gulmohar has its flaws. Just like the Batra family. These flaws humanize the story even further. The powerful central performances by Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee and Simran iron out all the rough edges in this heartwarming family drama..

A question for the producers: why release Gulmohar on OTT and Selfiee in cinemas? Get real. Get better consultants.
