Organisations representing some of Britain’s biggest property, hospitality and food businesses on Tuesday outlined their wish-lists for whoever becomes next Prime Minister.

The pleas were made in a series of manifestos before the December 12 general election.

Among policies the Food and Drink Federation wants to see prioritised is securing the “closest possible” UK-EU trade and regulatory relationship.

It also wants government to support efforts to make production and consumption more environmentally sustainable.

UKHospitality, which represents hotels, nightclubs and restaurants, wants a reform of the business rates system.

Meanwhile, the British Property Federation called on the government to conduct annual business rates revaluations.

The organisation, led by Melanie Leech, said: “Rates need to be responsive to economic changes to avoid stifling businesses, and therefore must reflect up-to-date rental values.”

Construction group Mace, which worked on the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium, wants to have a dedicated department for growth created. It said the responsibility for planning, business regulation, housing and transport is split between departments.

Mace said: “Bringing the relevant elements together into a coherent single government department would improve decision-making and efficiency.”
