Tracy Brabin's off-shoulder dress soars past £1,000 as MP auctions it for charity

A Labour MP has raised more than £1,000 for charity overnight after auctioning an off-the-shoulder dress that provoked a sexist Twitterstorm.

Tracy Brabin decided to sell her £35 Asos dress in aid of Girl Guiding after hitting back at trolls' claims it made her a "slag", a "slapper" and a "tart".

As of 8am today the dress had reached £1,280 on eBay with 72 bids - and with six days of the auction still to run.

And this may be the only chance you have to get your hands on it, as the MP claims Asos has sold out.

She posted: "All money raised will go to Girlguiding UK to support their work helping girls build confidence and self-esteem, in the hope that they grow up to be leaders. Please bid generously!"

The 58-year-old politician - who took over from murdered MP Jo Cox - bared her right shoulder in a black formal dress while raising points of order with Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle, 62, on Monday.

But it was the former Coronation Street actress's choice of attire that attracted the attention of viewers, and she began fielding a string of insults on social media.

One Twitter user slammed the Shadow Culture Secretary as "looking like a tart" with another adding "looks like she's on the morning after a walk of shame".

Another quipped: "Is this really appropriate attire for parliament? @TracyBrabin #DressStandards".

The Batley and Spen MP hit back tweeting: "Hello. Sorry I don't have time to reply to all of you commenting on this but I can confirm I'm not...A slag, Hungover. A tart. About to breastfeed. A slapper. Drunk. Just been banged over a wheelie bin.

"Who knew people could get so emotional over a shoulder..."

Ms Brabin branded the reaction "everyday sexism" telling the Mirror: "It was like some Victorian parlour game, you know, I’ve shown a bit of ankle. We used to call it slut-shaming.

“I was a prostitute, a slag, a slut, really demeaning words.”

She added: "It’s that sense that a powerful woman speaking about important things, obviously the only way you can shut her up is to talk about the way she looks.

“It’s a way to diminish us. It’s a classic case of men feeling they have every right to comment on a woman’s attire."
