It’s time for the NFL Draft to take over our television sets again for 2019, and once again Ohio State figures to have plenty of players’ names called. We’ve got you covered tracking all the OSU picks here at Buckeyes Wire.
At Ohio State, the NFL Draft takes on significance seen by only the bluest of bloods across the country. By all weights and measures, the Buckeye program has been an absolute draft machine even before Urban Meyer arrived to Columbus..
Stay with us throughout the draft as we track the progress of the players taken off the board from Ohio State beginning Thursday night right here, updated real-time.
Nick Bosa, Defensive end
Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, No. 2 overall – First Round
Bosa was widely considered as the No. 1 overall pick on most big boards for the 2019 NFL Draft. He has exceptional explosiveness off the line, is as strong as an ox and uses his hands and technique well off the line.
He had a setback with injury just three game into his junior year but looked 100 percent and ready to go at the NFL Combine. His bloodlines run deep in the NFL with his father and brother both having success in the league, and he has a chance to be an immediate-type impact player day one.
He’s been tagged as a “generational player” by some NFL suits. He could be a future All-Pro and maybe more. That’s why you take a guy this high.
Dwayne Haskins, Quarterback
Drafted by the Washington Redskins, No. 15 overall – First Round
Simply put, Haskins had the best single-season of any Ohio State or Big Ten quarterback in the history of the league. He re-wrote Buckeye passing records that might stand for quite some time. He possesses a cannon of an arm and can make any throw in the book.
At pick No. 15 he could be one of the steal of the drafts. He was a Heisman Finalist and Big Ten Player and Quarterback of the Year. He is one of just six FBS quarterbacks of all-time to throw fifty touchdowns in one season.
At 6-3, 220 lbs., he is a prototypical pocket passer with extreme accuracy, a high football IQ, exceptional character and a tireless work ethic. He was only the sixth college quarterback of all-time to throw fifty touchdown passes in a season, and he’s got the chance to be the face of the Washington Redskins franchise.
Next … Second round picks
Parris Campbell, Wide-receiver
Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, No. 59 overall – Second Round
The Indianapolis Colts just got themselves one of the fastest guys available in the draft at the No. 59 overall pick. Former Ohio State wide-receiver Parris Campbell can flat out fly, and is able to get up to that top speed in a blink of an eye.
Campbell was Ohio State’s leading receiver last year, and a favorite target of first round Redskins pick Dwayne Haskins. He caught a whopping 90 passes for 1,093 yards in 2018 and did so in multiple ways. He can catch swing passes, get out in space on end-arounds, or catch passes across the middle in mesh routes.
He’s the type of guy who will most likely line up at the slot in the NFL and can be used in space all over the field. He’s a game breaker much in the same mold of current New Orleans Saint Tedd Ginn, Jr.
Next … Third round picks
Dre’Mont, Defensive-end
Drafted by the Denver Broncos, No. 72 overall – Third Round
Ohio State defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones is officially off the board. The 6-3, 286 pounder out of Cincinnati was picked by the Denver Broncos as the 71st overall pick in the third round.
Though Jones didn’t get the publicity and hype of guys like Nick Bosa or one of the three Clemson defensive lineman, he’s an unsung hero that gets a good push in the middle of the offensive line. He can often tie up more than one blocker, and has a motor that doesn’t stop. Jones uses his hands, technique and size well to get leverage.
He was a First-Team All-Big Ten selection last year, a three-year starter at Ohio State, and has the potential to have a solid and productive NFL career. He’s another high character guy. We may see that he was a little underrated when it’s all said and done with the Broncos getting a sweet deal.
