The annual tradition of other NFL teams poaching coaches from Sean McVay’s staff in Los Angeles has continued this year, with several assistants leaving the Rams for opportunities elsewhere. It’s a testament to the job McVay does developing coaches and preparing them for jobs around the league, but it also tasks him with replacing multiple members of his staff each year.
Thus far, the Rams have lost a handful of assistant coaches already, none bigger than defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. And with that hire by the Falcons, Morris brought two more Rams assistants with him to Atlanta.
We’ll be tracking all of the Rams’ 2024 coaching departures here, a list that’s seemingly growing by the day.
Raheem Morris (defensive coordinator)
New job: Falcons head coach
The biggest domino to fall for the Rams this offseason was the Falcons’ hiring of Morris as their next head coach. He was in the running for several head coaching jobs around the NFL this offseason but it was the Falcons who stepped up and hired him.
With Morris gone, the Rams are searching for a new defensive coordinator, as well as two other assistant positions after he brought Zac Robinson and Jimmy Lake with him to Atlanta.
Zac Robinson (QBs coach/pass game coordinator)
New job: Falcons offensive coordinator
Robinson had been with the Rams since 2019, working with the quarterbacks and offensive staff throughout his tenure. By all accounts, he did a great job with the Rams’ quarterbacks and was a valuable part of McVay’s staff in Los Angeles.
He now heads to Atlanta for his first offensive coordinator opportunity, and he’ll presumably be calling the plays on offense with Morris being a defensive-minded coach.
Jimmy Lake (assistant head coach)
New job: Falcons defensive coordinator
Lake was the former head coach at Washington before joining the Rams in 2023 as their assistant head coach. It was a brief one-year stint in Los Angeles because he’s now the Falcons’ defensive coordinator under Morris. The two worked together on the Buccaneers’ staff previously, so they have some experience with one another, but this will be Lake’s first chance to be a defensive coordinator in the NFL.
Eric Henderson (defensive line coach)
New job: USC co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach
Henderson was the first Rams coach to leave this year, being hired by USC as the team’s co-defensive coordinator, D-line coach and run game coordinator after five years with the Rams. He was beloved by Aaron Donald and the Rams’ other defensive linemen, which makes this a significant loss for Los Angeles — especially after seeing the rapid development of Kobie Turner and the team’s other young defenders up front.
Jeremy Springer (assistant special teams coordinator)
New job: Patriots special teams coordinator
Springer got his first NFL coaching opportunity with the Rams in 2022, being hired as their assistant special teams coach. After just two seasons in Los Angeles, Springer is heading to New England to become the Patriots' special teams coach under Jerod Mayo.
