While photographic and video artist Tracey Moffatt has produced cohesive bodies of work that she has exhibited nationally and internationally over the past 25 years, this exhibition pulls out key threads within these works for a more in-depth focus.
Her photographic series Laudanum 1998 and Plantation 2009 are connected through their depiction of old colonial homes and the way she plays with the medium through toned photogravures. Moffatt’s love of cinema and melodrama is particularly evident in Laudanum with its references to German filmmaker F.W. Murnau’s avant-garde 1922 film Nosferatu.
Her montage videos, made with Gary Hillberg, investigate the idea of love. Love 2003 traces the evolution of romantic love to brutality, and Other 2009 narrates the attraction between races, sexes and genders.
