Toyota to launch road-going version of Le Mans-winning hybrid race car

Toyota Motor Corp. intends to market the hybrid vehicle that it just used to win the Le Mans 24 Hours race for the first time as a high-end sports car.

So far, people have strongly associated HV technology with fuel efficiency, so there has been less focus on such vehicles' driving performance. With the overall victory in the race, Toyota has proved the strong power of an HV equipped with both an electric motor and an engine.

The GR Super Sport Concept, the prototype for the sports car planned to be put on the market, is made from almost the same components as the HV used in the race. It employs a hybrid system combining a 2.4-liter twin-turbo engine and a motor with explosive power equivalent to 1,000 horsepower.

Toyota said it has not decided the price or marketing timetable, among other details.
