A Toyota Supra owner recently got a surprise when he ran out of gas while driving to a fuel station. Parker Jones shared his story in a TikTok video that got a lot of attention online. The video showed something unexpected about the 2023 Toyota Supra’s gas tank that left him shocked. Jones was driving his grey Supra to fill up with E85 fuel when his car ran out of gas.
E85 is a special fuel that has 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent regular gasoline mixed together. This fuel has a much higher octane rating than normal gas, somewhere between 100 and 105. Regular gas is usually 87 octane, and premium gas is around 91 to 93 octane. The higher octane means cars can make more power, which is why performance car owners like it. But E85 gas stations are hard to find in many areas, which might be why Jones waited too long to fill up.
After his car died on the road, Jones grabbed a gas can and poured about four gallons into the empty tank. When he started the car and looked at the fuel gauge, he could not believe what he saw. The gauge showed the tank was already half full. “These may have really small tanks. Cause that got half a tank of gas. That’s crazy,” Jones said in his video. He then drove to an E85 station to finish filling up the tank. He guessed the Supra probably has a 13 gallon tank, which seemed very small to him.
This sports car has a really tiny gas tank
Jones was pretty much right with his guess. Car and Driver says the 2023 Toyota Supra has a 13.7 gallon gas tank. That is much smaller than most cars you see on the road today. The older Supras from the 1990s had much bigger tanks, holding between 18.5 and 19.8 gallons. So the new model has way less space for gas than the old one.
Toyota probably made the tank smaller to keep the car light and fast. Sports cars try to be as light as possible because less weight means better performance. But this also means Supra owners have to stop for gas more often, especially if they use E85 fuel. Like the surprising costs of owning luxury Toyota vehicles, the Supra has some downsides that might catch owners off guard.
E85 fuel does help cars make more power because of its high octane rating. It can add anywhere from 30 to 100 extra horsepower depending on the car. But there is a catch. E85 burns through fuel much faster than regular gas. You need about 30 to 35 percent more E85 to go the same distance as regular gas. This means worse gas mileage. When you combine bad gas mileage with the Supra’s tiny 13.7 gallon tank, owners will be stopping at gas stations a lot more than they might want to.
Car experts always tell drivers not to let their cars run completely out of gas. Progressive says running out of gas can make engine parts get too hot and damage important parts of the car. With the Supra’s small tank, owners need to watch their fuel gauge carefully if they want to avoid ending up stuck on the side of the road like Jones did. As mechanics often warn about taking care of your car, it is always better to prevent problems than to deal with a breakdown.
