Toyota has confirmed a global recall of roughly 655,000 Camry vehicles due to a display system error that may deactivate safety indicators, such as hazard lights and turn signals, during startup.
The vast majority of the recalled cars were sold in the U.S., where over 508,000 model year 2025-2026 Camry Hybrids are impacted.
According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these vehicles feature a 7-inch (17.8 centimeters) display combination meter that can go blank at startup. In addition to turn signals and hazard lights, warnings like seat belt reminders and "key left in ignition" buzzers may also stop functioning.
These display malfunctions heighten crash risks for drivers unable to see crucial indicators and impair "the ability of other road users to recognize the driver’s intent to change direction or indicate a vehicle hazard," the NHTSA warned.
Texas-based Toyota Motor North America, a subsidiary of the Japanese parent automaker, stated it will notify all known owners of affected Camrys to bring their vehicles to a certified dealership. Dealers will subsequently install a software update free of charge to resolve the issue.
Owner notification letters are scheduled to be sent starting Sept. 21 in the U.S., with Toyota planning to complete outreach by early October. In the interim, motorists can check the NHTSA's and Toyota's online recall lookup tools to confirm if their car is affected.
Toyota confirmed to The Associated Press via email on Tuesday that the recall affects markets across North America, the Middle East, Asia, and several other regions. The 655,000 impacted vehicles globally were manufactured between December 2023 and July 2026 across three assembly plants located in the U.S., Japan, and Thailand.
