Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda has issued a statement in response to the recent inappropriate remarks made by Yoshiro Mori, president of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The remarks on women were "truly regrettable and contradict the values that Toyota has always cherished," Toyoda said.

The statement was relayed by Toyota's Operating Officer Jun Nagata during an earnings press briefing held on Wednesday.

Regarding the reason for the release of the statement, Nagata said, "We must not remain silent when it comes to conveying what Toyota values and how we view the world."

The automaker has signed a top sponsorship contract with the International Olympic Committee as a worldwide Olympic partner.
