Like many other major sports stadiums and infrastructure around the United States, Toyota Center was lit up blue (instead of its usual Rockets red) in downtown Houston on Thursday night.
Houston’s sports and civic venues joined forces to turn the city blue as part of the global #LightItBlue movement to support the men and women on the front lines of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
As part of the program in Houston, Toyota Center, City Hall, the George R. Brown Convention Center, BBVA Stadium, Minute Maid Park, NRG Stadium, Rice Stadium, Reckling Park, TDECU Stadium, and the bridges over Highway 59 all turned their signage blue.
Thursday’s message over the Toyota Center entrance reads:
Thank you frontline workers. We appreciate you!
The #LightItBlue and #MakeItBlue movement began last week in the United Kingdom as they lit major landmarks throughout the country in salute to their health care providers.
According to the Rockets, the goal is to create a global expression of support and gratitude to the health care and essential professionals who are saving lives while helping to stabilize societies amid the pandemic.
