NAGOYA -- Toyota Motor Corp. began sales of the newest generation of its Century luxury sedan, marking the first major change to the model in 21 years.
Used to chauffeur the Imperial family, political leaders and corporate executives, the Century had previously undergone only one major change since its debut in 1967.
The third-generation model is powered by a hybrid system with a 5-liter V8 engine and electric motor. Toyota says the new version has a fuel efficiency of 13.6 kilometers per liter, a remarkable figure nearly twice that of the second generation. In terms of length, it is 6.5 centimeters longer than the previous model to provide more comfort in the back row. It also boasts advanced safety features including an auto braking system.

The new Century also features Japanese-style designs such as cloisonne patterns on the front grill and speakers.
It is priced at 19.6 million yen including tax, about 7 million yen more than the previous model. Toyota has set a sales target of 50 units per month, with the company reporting it has already received more than 300 orders.
