The Toyosu Market in Koto Ward, Tokyo, resumed accepting all customers Monday. They had not for three months, and restaurants and other places in the market were crowded again.
Wholesalers in the central wholesale market were able to keep their businesses, but the market stopped accepting all customers from Feb. 29 due to the spread of the coronavirus. Some restaurants were closed. The market decided to accept customers after shortening the time they could stay at the market and taking their temperatures by thermography. The popular viewing tuna auction from an observation deck was postponed until counter measures are thoroughly taken.
Sushi restaurant Daiwa Zushi at the market reopened after installing vinyl sheets along the counter to prevent splashing.
"When a customer says, 'I've been waiting for you,' I feel like crying," said President Mitsuhiro Irino, 50. "We put safety and security first."
