
Toyo University sophomore Ryusei Tanaka crosses the finish line of the fifth leg of the Tokyo-Hakone Intercollegiate Ekiden on Wednesday in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, giving his university its second straight victory in the first half of the prestigious two-day college road relay.
The university covered the 107.5 kilometers over five legs in 5 hours 26 minutes 31 seconds. The 2018 overall champion Aoyama Gakuin University finished sixth for the day, and will start the second day's race from Hakone to Tokyo 5 minutes 30 seconds behind Toyo. Aoyama Gakuin is aiming for its fifth straight overall win in the event, which covers 217.1 kilometers in total.
