If there’s one thing we can be certain of, it’s that Toy Story 4 won’t be leaving a dry eye in the cinema.
Just a few months after Tim Allen teased the forthcoming Pixar sequel’s “emotional” final scene, Tom Hanks – who voices Woody – has reflected upon his personal experience, deeming the climax as a “moment in history.”
Speaking on Chris Evans’ Radio 2 Breakfast Show, Hanks recalled voicing the final scene which occurred on the final day of recording, which also happened to be the end of the movie.
“The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually, you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it. But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me.
“When I realised what they were going for, I realised, ‘Oh, this is a moment in history’.”
Buzz Lightyear actor Allen previously revealed the final scene is so emotional he could barely get through it. He described the way the film’s writers, Will McCormack and Stephany Folsom, decided to end the sequel as “so big” it startled him.
He later elaborated: “They’ve got great characters but a couple of scenes toward the end were really hard to get through.”
The fourth instalment in the Pixar franchise comes more than two decades after the original. Earlier this year, the film’s first footage was shown at CineEurope in Barcelona, a conference for cinema exhibitors, featuring characters Woody, Buzz and Bo Peep.
Toy Story 4 is set to be released in cinemas 21 June 2019. Josh Cooley will direct from a script written by Wil McCormack and Stephany Folsom.
The film will arrive after nearly a nine-year gap since Toy Story 3, and more than two decades after the original, which was released in 1995.
