Toxteth now has its own 'Tocky Tart' - we find out just how tasty it is

While Manchester has its own tart and Eccles its very own 'cake', there is no well-known or popular sweet treat associated solely with Liverpool or any of its districts.

Cake enthusiast Peter Hughes, a member of Liverpool Arts Lab, an arts group based at the Florrie on Mill Street in Dingle , is so concerned about this culinary gap that he decided to create his own cake.

The Toxteth Tart, or Tocky Tart as it is also known, is Liverpool 8 's answer to regional cake pride - a vegan treat that puts into cake form a little of the history of the area.

Toxteth Tart's creator Peter Hughes explains how he chose a marmalade base because of a story he heard about kids from Liverpool 8 in years past gathering up oranges from the nearby docks.

Peter said: "I was speaking to a guy in a local boozer and he told me this story about the fruit docks, how all the kids would run down and come back up with oranges packed into their jumpers, so many that their mums didn't know what to do with them and they ended up making marmalade."

The cake itself is made from Victoria sponge and Peter says: "This is because this area was mostly developed during the Victorian times."

The whole delicacy is wrapped in a soft not-too-sweet pastry case and topped with a spiced chocolate drizzle on top.

Although the National Trust at Speke Hall have reference to a recipe for Liverpool Tart from 1897 - a lemon-based dish - it has never taken off as our regional pudding.

The Tocky Tart however, has been making a monthly appearance at Granby Market throughout 2019 and, according to its creator Peter, may also feature during the Toxteth Day of the Dead event, which will descend on Liverpool 8 on November 23.

The ECHO went along with members of Liverpool Arts Lab on a culinary journey through the streets of Liverpool 8 as they introduced the dessert to local residents, a journey which was recorded by local filmmaker and Liverpool Arts Lab member Jah Jussa.

Could the Tocky Tart and its zesty orange base warm the tastebuds of Toxteth residents?

On Lodge Lane, there was a scramble outside the fruit and veg market with shoppers eager to get a taste. Local resident Lee said: "That's spot on that."

At the Welsh Streets , it was a case of cake stopped work as contractors clamoured for a taste.

Granby resident and community activist Joe Farrag was so impressed by the tart that he nearly disappeared with the entire batch.

Peter said: "The feedback has been really positive. I've not met anyone yet who doesn't like it.

"It's not something that I've really thought of making a business out of - I don't sell them, I just love baking - but people do seem to really like the Tocky Tart so we'll see where we go next.

"We want to move it forward in a community-minded way, and I'm also hoping to raise awareness for the Toxteth Day of the Death and the Beating of the Bounds, as well as to share the love for the Tocky Tart."

The Beating of the Bounds is a procession organised by Liverpool Arts Lab and will take place on the Toxteth Day of the Dead on November 23.

The Toxteth Day of the Dead is an annual event organised by former members of the KLF Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, which was first held last year.

This year, there will also be parties at the Florrie on Mill Street and District in the Baltic Triangle on November 23.
