Toxteth murder fugitive probed over Brit ex-pat pensioner shooting in Spanish villa

A Liverpool man held in Spain last month - wanted by police for three years following the murder of a Merseyside teenager - is now being investigated over the shooting of an ex-pat British pensioner.

Fugitive Jason Curry was arrested last month following a violent attempted robbery in the principality of Mijas on the Costa Del Sol.

The ECHO recently reported how the Toxteth man, who'd been a fugitive since 2017, had been detained by the Guardia Civil.

It was separate to him being sought by detectives on Merseyside for questions about the shooting dead of 18-year-old Yusuf Sonko on Tagus Street.

Now, it has emerged Mr Curry, in his mid-20s, was held in Spain after a 70-year-old Brit was shot in his leg in his luxury villa on October 21.

Two men burst into the property in the Chaparral area, and initially, the businessman stood up to them before a firearm was discharged.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene and discovered the victim on the floor with a bullet wound in his thigh.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

It is understood nothing of value was taken from the villa.

It has been suggested more people have been arrested, alongside Mr Curry, also with connections to Merseyside, but that is unconfirmed.

The Guardia Civil told the ECHO their investigation was continuing along with their probe of Mr Curry's alleged involvement.

Police in Merseyside have been in touch with their counterparts in Spain about the Liverpool man being taken into custody.

Talks are at an early stage, and it appears unlikely Mr Curry would be flown back to Merseyside in the near future.

It's been indicated any investigation and prosecution in Spain would take precedence before detectives in Liverpool get the chance to talk to him about the high-profile killing on Tagus Street, at 8.30pm on Friday, June 2, 2017.

Mr Sonko was shot once in the head behind the Lodge Lane shops, and four weeks after the murder, police publicly appealed for help to track down Mr Curry, who they were very keen to speak to about the shooting.

A number of people have been arrested in connection with the killing, but nobody has been charged.

The shooter was carrying a 9mm handgun and witness reports suggested the gunman was on a pushbike and fired the self-loading pistol five times, at a group of people, including Yusuf.

Firearm casings and two rounds of ammunition were found at the scene.

Mr Curry also has connections to North Wales, particularly Wrexham, and Cumbria.

In the wake of Mr Sonko’s murder, armed police and dog units swarmed on Smithdown Road in the city with the hope of tracking down Mr Curry after a possible sighting.

Yusuf Sonko's heartbroken parents have previously appealed for the "wall of silence" surrounding his death to be brought down.

In an open letter, his parents Khadija and Papice Sonko said: "Our son, Yusuf, was brutally murdered, shot in the head on June 2, 2017 on Lodge Lane, a busy street, with many people there witnessing what happened on that fateful evening.

"No one from our community, not his friends, no mother, sister, brother or father has yet had the courage to come forward, to give evidence, to bring the person who killed my boy to justice.

"We are writing this letter to appeal to you, to our community members, to come forward with any information to bring the killer of Yusuf to face justice.

"We are appealing to you, please help us. Please come forward with information. Our community must break this wall of silence.

"It just takes one person to do the right thing.

"Put yourselves in our position, what would you want if it was your child or family member that was killed?

"Please come forward, speak to the police and please bring us some peace."

A £20,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for Yusuf’s death remains in place.
