'Toxic' NHS trust linked to baby deaths to faces fresh lawsuits from families

A “toxic” NHS trust where failings have been linked to the deaths of babies and mums is facing a flood of fresh lawsuits.

The probe into serious errors at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has soared to 600 cases spanning 40 years.

It has emerged nearly 100 families are planning to sue the trust.

Police are said to be considering charges over what is feared to be the worst NHS maternity scandal.

A leaked report showed failings include 22 stillbirths, three deaths during pregnancy, 17 baby deaths and three deaths of mothers.

The inquiry, led by Donna Ockenden, followed a campaign by parents, including Rhiannon and Richard Stanton-Davies, whose daughter Kate passed away in 2009.

Kay Kelly, head of clinical negligence at law firm Lanyon Bowdler, said they had been inundated with calls. She said: “We’ve got seven or eight people taking calls.

"It’s terrible – people are crying even though it happened years ago. As I understand it, [the Ockenden review] has had 100 new inquiries since the leak.”

Law firm Shoosmiths is representing a mother whose son died in 2003 after an attempted breech delivery. His head was trapped for 30 minutes and he died two and a half hours later.

Rhiannon Davies last week said: “I’m going to push for police to bring a charge of corporate manslaughter.”
