Spate of car thefts — one at knifepoint — as north Queensland city battles youth crime

Police are still looking for several people, including a number of youths, after a motorist was allegedly threatened with a knife and a stolen car was driven erratically across Townsville.

Officers in the north Queensland city said just before 6:00pm on Sunday, a group of four people, including youths, were throwing objects from a stolen car at a 48-year-old man who was driving a dual-cab ute.

The man allegedly chased the youths then crashed into the rear of their car causing them to stop.

The man was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Detective Acting Inspector Phil Watts urged people to leave such matters to police.

"While I understand there is a level of frustration, this male's actions put himself, the community and the people in the stolen vehicle at extreme risk," he said.

A 17-year-old girl was arrested at the scene and charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Officers are continuing to search for other people who allegedly committed other crimes after the crash.

Police said two males forced a 31-year-old woman from her vehicle at knifepoint after she stopped to assist at the crash.

They said the pair, along with a third male, then fled in the woman's orange sedan.

Officers received reports of the car doing burn-outs, running red lights and dodging traffic until they found it abandoned about 8:30am today.

Acting Inspector Watts said a 33-year-old man was arrested this morning and is assisting police with their inquiries.

"There does appear to be a mix of juveniles and adults," he said.

In a separate incident, police said they arrested two girls, aged 12 and 14, early this morning after seeing them driving a car reported as stolen.

Police said the keys to that car had been stolen hours earlier from a Townsville property.

The latest incidents come days after Townsville police announced they were bolstering patrols in a bid to address a spike in car thefts and youth crime.
