Townsville cyclists rejoice as Castle Hill Road reopens

Cyclists are chuffed to be climbing Castle Hill once more.

Townsville's iconic Castle Hill has reopened to cyclists and vehicles following its closure on April 4.

Castle Hill Road was closed to vehicles and bikes to enable pedestrians to exercise under social distancing guidelines.

Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride president Patrick Sutton said he supported the decision to close the road but he was pleased to see it open again.

"As you know Townsville is very flat and there is not many places we can climb a hill," Mr Sutton said.

"Having Castle Hill open again is great, otherwise it is all the way to Mt Stuart or Hervey Range."

Mr Sutton said he had been cycling more during the lockdown because there were fewer activities on offer.

"It has actually given us a bit more time," he said.

"The Ross River Mountain Bike Club have had huge numbers out there at Douglas riding, the numbers are amazing."

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill urged road users to take extra care as the road and tracks had been very busy.

"It will continue to be busy on Castle Hill thanks to this fantastic weather and the last thing anyone wants is any accidents to occur," Cr Hill said
