The body of a woman has been recovered in the New South Wales Monaro region after reports she was swept away by floodwaters as heavy rain battered the state's south-east corner overnight.
Emergency services received reports of a couple who had become trapped in floodwaters in a vehicle at Tuross at about 2:20am.
Police say the woman, believed to be 37 years old, got out of the car and was swept downstream.
A body was located at about 7:15am and is yet to be formally identified.
A man in the vehicle with her was uninjured and did not require medical treatment.
Meanwhile, flash flooding has occurred at Mogo, south of Batemans Bay, with reports of up to 200 millimetres of rain falling overnight in nearby areas.
The SES has responded to at least eight flood rescues involving people who have driven through floodwaters and campers who have been caught in isolated locations.
Police Chief Superintendent Colin Malone warned drivers not to make the same mistake.
Sudden inundation
The president of the Mogo Village Business Chamber, Richard Adams, said he heard the heavy rain overnight but did not expect it to cause this level of flooding.
He said based on the height of the water at his home he expected at least half the town would be inundated.
"The tide's rising so the water's going to keep rising," he said.
A moderate flood warning is in effect for the Moruya and Deua rivers.
Senior forecaster Jordan Notara from the Bureau of Meteorology said a further 100mm of rain could fall in parts of the south coast today.
"We have seen isolated pockets of heavy rainfall over the 24 hours leading into this morning," Mr Notara said.
SES Division Commander Mike Day hoped the worst of the weather had passed and the flood threat was easing.
"The rate of rainfall has decreased significantly during the day, which has resulted in the stream running into Mogo going down" he said.
"We can't see a forecast similar to last night, our operational tempo is slowing down a little bit in terms of Mogo."
"We are assisting business owners out there with a supply of sandbags for property protection just in case there is more water.
Extensive flood damage follows fires
Owner of Roman Leathergoods and pop-up mall tenant Lorena Granados said many homes and businesses in Mogo had been damaged.
"The highway has been cleared but that was flooded this morning. I've never seen anything like it in my 20 years here," she said.
"There's a lot of flood damage to the shops, the petrol station — the freezer has tipped over. All the shops in the middle of town have had flooding at floor level and it's very muddy."
After losing her shop in the Black Summer bushfires, Ms Granados has been operating in a temporary demountable, which suffered flood damage.
"My heart just sank to my stomach", she said.
"Since we did burn down, for two years we've been trying to take off and just recover, and we just haven't been given the opportunity."
"For us to have this blow at this time of year is just devastating."
