Towns' Christmas fairs cancelled following city centre overcrowding

Christmas fairs in Beeston and Stapleford have been cancelled, Broxtowe Borough Council has confirmed.

It comes after Nottingham Christmas Market was called off on Sunday, December 6 after overcrowding meant social distancing was not possible.

Now the leader of the Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic said Christmas fairs planned for Beeston and Stapleford have also been cancelled.

The events planned for Beeston Square on December 12 and Walter Parker VC Square in Stapleford on December 19.

Councillor Radulovic said: “A great deal of thought and consideration was given to how we could run these events safely to help support local businesses and traders.

"It has been a difficult decision to cancel but given the crowds at events elsewhere in the county over the weekend, going ahead would be too great a risk to the health of local people.

"Please continue to support local businesses by shopping safely in our town centres and supporting them online where you can.”
