Town smells so bad residents won't open windows and keep kids inside

Residents of a smelly town say they can't open their windows and have to keep their kids inside to prevent the pong getting into their homes.

The stench in Winterton, North Lincolnshire, is so bad that even passing motorists are forced to roll up their windows.

Furious residents blame rotting garbage from a landfill nearly a mile away for the smell, and some have pledged they will move away if the problem persists.

The operator of the stinking site, Biffa, has refused to pull the plug further angering residents, reports Grimsby Live.

Worried locals say they are unable to open their windows or let their children play outside because of the stench.

The tip - between the towns of Roxby and Winterton - has caused problems for residents for more than 20 years but has becoming increasingly worse.

But Biffa claims it is taking extra measures to manage the issue.

Clea Storrs, who has lived in the town for the majority of her life, said the smell had recently become so bad that she felt she would have to move house.

She said: "Recently it has got increasingly worse - it's become unbearable.

"My little girl absolutely loves her play set, climbing frame and in the garden but over the last few weeks it's been a point blank no - the smell is that bad.

"She is starting to distinguish the smell for herself now and it's not fair that it affects her daily life.

"Because of this, we would now love to put this house up for sale and move - we only bought the house a few years ago but we do fear people won't want to buy it because of the smell putting potential buyers off."

Daniela David said she cannot stand opening her windows to be welcomed by the stench.

And she said: "It's genuinely difficult to even let my three-year-old grandson out of the house because of how bad the smell gets."

Donna Hemstock also said she can smell the waste tip from inside her home at times.

She said: "You sort of become accustomed to the smell - but that doesn't mean we aren't sick of it.

"I'm sure people appreciate what Biffa are doing but more needs to be done.

"They cannot expect us to live like this."

The smell has also been known to affect  businesses in Winterton, with pub-goers put off from using beer gardens in summer time.

Mel P and Sammi Irons, who run the George Hogg pub in the town's Market Place, said they can sometimes smell the landfill site, which is more than a mile away.

They said: "It doesn't bother us as much as it does people who live the other side of Winterton but there are days when we can smell it.

"There has been times when people have had to come back inside on hot days instead of using the beer garden because they can't stand the smell."

But Ann Sandon, a Winterton resident for more than 20 years, said she felt people blow the issue out of proportion.

She said while at times the smell is extremely potent, people should learn to live with it.

Ann said: "It's an inconvenience but it's something that you learn to live with really.

"It has to be done somewhere and it's been here for a long, long time.

"It's our waste too. I'm sure they'll sort it out as soon as possible - whenever it's been as bad as this Biffa have usually done a good job to reduce it."

Winterton town mayor Don Johnson and Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy both confirmed they were in discussions with Biffa about the problem.

Mr Johnson said they were extremely concerned about the "unbearable" smell.

Mr Percy said Biffa had informed him that the issues arose following the heavy rainfall at the end of last year.

This delayed the company in-filling the current operational waste cell and installing the capping which prevents odours from escaping.

He said along with ward councillors and Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft, he recently met with Biffa and  North Lincolnshire Council's environmental health team to discuss the ongoing "unacceptable issues" with the landfill site.

In a statement, Biffa apologised for the "inconvenience" to residents and pledged to continue to work with other organisations to manage the issue.

A spokesperson for Biffa said: "Heavy rainfall during the latter part of 2019 led to more difficult operating conditions than usual at our Roxby site.

"In order to manage the issue, we agreed a plan with the Environment Agency and have already successfully installed a number of extra measures, including additional gas extraction infrastructure
