Town set for Tier 2 records England's biggest week-on-week spike in Covid cases

Harlow in Essex is the latest area to record a spike in coronavirus infection rates, as England's lockdown comes to an end.

The town's rates have jumped up from 151.6 new cases per 100,000 people to 225.1, with 196 new cases in one week.

The area is set to go into Tier 2 restrictions when England's lockdown ends on December 2.

The other areas with the biggest week-on-week jumps in Covid-19 rates are Medway in Kent, which is headed for Tier 3, and Ipswich in Suffolk, which will be in Tier 2.

The latest figures show Medway is up from 343.6 to 447.7, with 1,247 new cases, and Ipswich is up from 92.0 to 157.8, with 216 new cases.

It comes as Boris Johnson this week outlined his winter plan for ending England's lockdown.

Most of the country will be plunged back into revised Tier 2 and 3 restrictions.

Only Cornwall and the Isle of Wight have escaped the harshest measures.

The rules will be relaxed slightly for five days over the Christmas period to allow festive reunions.

However officials have warned people to consider not putting vulnerable relatives at risk.

Swale in Kent continues to have the highest rate in England, with 841 new cases recorded in the seven days to November 23 - the equivalent of 560.4 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from 655.0 in the seven days to November 16.

Thanet, also in Kent, has the second highest rate, down from 521.4 to 468.6, with 665 new cases

Boston, in Lincolnshire, is in third place, where the rate has dropped from 468.8 to 453.2, with 318 new cases.

Hull was previously leading the statistics (PA)

Full list of infection rates by area

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency, based on Public Health England data published on November 27 on the Government's coronavirus dashboard.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to November 23; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to November 23; rate of new cases in the seven days to November 16; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to November 16.
