Town's summer beach attraction cancelled due to coronavirus

The annual beach and summer fair in Mansfield's Market Place have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mansfield BID confirmed it has taken the decision to cancel the event as a result of the lockdown measures, with most town centre shops now closed.

The BID has also announced the annual Garden and Craft Festival, which runs in the market in September, has also been shelved until 2021.

A spokesperson for Mansfield BID said: "Sadly, we have taken the decision to cancel the Garden and Craft Festival, and the beach.

"It is a shame because these events have proved to be incredibly popular and have brought more and more people into Mansfield town centre.

"But, in light of current events, it made absolute sense that they should not go ahead."

The 'Life's a Beach' attraction was scheduled to run in the market between August 3 and August 29, while the Garden and Craft Festival was due to take place on September 5 and 6.

The BID spokesperson says planning for the craft festival has now moved into next year's event.

"When a particular event finishes, we straight away begin planning for the following year's event", they added.

"So, while a lot of planning has already been done for the Garden and Craft Festival, no additional costs, such as advertising have been incurred.

"Similarly, no money has been spent on the beach.

"We remain hopeful that this year's Christmas market will take place, and we are still able to take bookings for the chalets.

"Of course, we will be monitoring the situation and if it does not go ahead because of Covid-19, any deposits will be returned.

"People who want to find out more about next year's Garden and Craft Festival, or this year's Christmas market, should email sue@mansfieldbid.co.uk."

The annual Armed Forces Day celebration, on June 28, has also been cancelled due to Covid-19.
