Town's last nightclub closes doors for final time

The last nightclub in a town on the Wirral peninsula has closed its doors for the last time.

Club Xes, in the centre of Ellesmere Port, opened for a final send-off on New Year's Day (January 1).

Billed on its Facebook page as "Ellesmere Port's only nightclub", it has operated on the first floor of the Saffron Indian restaurant which also closed for good last month.

In a post on Facebook on January 1, Club Xes said: "Club Xes is open tonight for one last time as we close the doors for good after this evening, so come on down and enjoy the final night at Club Xes."

Club Xes first launched in September 2010 following a £250,000 investment by businessman Sam Haque, who also owned Saffron, Cheshire Live reports.

Under different ownership, a nightclub previously operated at the venue off Whitby Road under the name 'Zest' for several years.

In December, Saffron had a notice on the entrance doors stating: "Saffron is closed permanently, sorry".

It came after the restaurant and takeaway venue had been put up for sale for more than half a million pounds back in October.

The premises was being marketed by Leeds-based estate agency Everard Cole, with freehold offers expected in the region of £575,000.

However, the premises is no longer listed on its website.

CheshireLive reported in November that the restaurant business had been hit with a £20,000 fine for using illegal workers.

It was one of 15 employers in the north west to receive a civil penalty for illegal working.
