Town's 'eye-watering' smell that's 'putting people off eating'

People living in a town plagued by a bad smell have taken to social media once again to complain about the quality of air in their area.

Residents of Ellesmere Port say the smell is so bad they have to shut windows and doors, with one person saying it sometimes leaves their "eyes watering".

One person, posting in a local Facebook group last week said they had "forgotten how bad" the smell could get in Ellesmere Port.

The poster said they were "waking up in the night to shut the windows because it smells so strong."

Others took to the comments to agree they'd noticed the smell in the town, although opinion differed as to where it was coming from, with some pointing to the wide range of industry in the town and others saying the cause was something of a mystery.

One person said: "I'm not sure what causes it mate but it's horrid.

"I love the smell of burning rubber and oil. This is on another level though."

Another said said: "I smell that every day it's disgusting."

Once person added they'd noticed the smell goes away as they move out of Ellesmere Port.

He said: "I take my lad to the golfing range in Mickle Trafford and you can't smell it at all up that way.

"It just proves the Port must get the brunt of it.

"It stinks."

One person, who asked not to be named, told the ECHO the smell could be "eye watering" and puts them off leaving their washing on the line outside.

She said: "There's no point putting it out as it comes back in smelling dirtier, it's horrible."

A visitor to the town, who also asked not to be named, said they had noticed the smell after visiting a nearby cinema this weekend.

She said: "I came out of the cinema on Sunday night, and the smell hanging in the air was appalling.

"We'd been considering going for something to eat, but the overpowering stench was so bad that it put me off the thought of food."

This is not the first time people have complained about the smell in Ellesmere Port, with various reports over the years of people troubled by the stench.

As far back as 17 years ago, CheshireLive was looking at the problems of Ellesmere Port's smell after comments in a national newspaper about the phrase "smells like Ellesmere Port" and likening it to the stench of a burning oven.

Back in 2004, Cheshire Live reported on how readers overwhelmingly agreed with the sentiment.

One person was reported as saying: "'I was born and bred here, and the Port does, at times, have a pervading smell.

"Any claims to the contrary will not convince us."

17 years later, it seems, for some living in and visiting the town, that smell has yet to go away.
