Town left 'ashamed' by 'embarrassing' Christmas decorations

A Merseyside town has been left angry over their "embarrassing" town centre Christmas decorations.

St Helens town centre hosts a large Christmas tree and decorations every year as the festive season approaches, however this year, local people have been left disappointed with the council's attempts.

People took to Facebook to complain about the town's Christmas display.

The town's lights switch on was originally set for Saturday November 27, however due to extreme weather brought by Storm Arwen, the event was postponed.

However, the townspeople are unhappy with the level of decorations around the town, and state of the large Christmas tree in Church Square.

One resident said: "It's embarrassing compared to other places."

While some compared the town's display to nearby towns such as Warrington and Wigan.

A resident said: "I went to Warrington this week and theirs are superb, really Christmassy puts ours to shame"

Yvonne Godbold, who lives in St Helens, suggested that people band together and decorate the tree themselves, she said: "I'm just fed up with the council being blamed for not doing anything when we have a lot of people in the community who care and want to do something

"It's not fair that people have to suffer so much with lack of funding when we can all do something nice to show we care for our community, Christmas has been awful these last few years, it would show everyone in our town that we are not going to let it sink without a fight and give people a chance to show some love and Christmas spirit when the town needs it the most."

Yvonne also posted in a local community Facebook group, People of St Helens, where she suggested the idea of the community banding together to decorate the tree themselves.

Her post received over a hundred likes and almost 80 comments, with many agreeing that they should do something to help.

A St Helens Borough Council spokesperson said “Our Christmas lights in St Helens Town Centre have not yet been switched on and so residents will not be able to see the full effect until after this Thursday’s event. We are delighted that our special guest Leah Bennett, Child of Courage winner from Pride of St Helens Awards will do the honours of switching on the lights for us this year.

“We are also very grateful to our wonderful community that supports Christmas in St Helens Borough, and businesses including Rainfords Christmas Tree Land who donated the tree in Victoria Square, and P&R Electrical who have decorated the tree for free in support of Willowbrook Hospice’s Decorate and Donate project, something we are promoting too.

“This year the council has invested in more events and attractions for families, to encourage our residents into our town centres. And we have more attractions in the run up to Christmas than ever before, with our new drive-in cinema showing festive favourites and a cosy, fire-lit tipi lodge on the Chalon Way site, Christmas crafts and ice rinks, carol performances, and visits from Santa and his reindeer in both St Helens and Earlestown town centres, as well as exciting line-ups at our switch-on events.”
