Town house to be demolished under council proposal

An historic old town house in Ayr has been earmarked for demolition as part of a council proposal.

It is proposed to tear down the former Savers shop. It is the last building still standing at the bottom of the High Street next to a razed site.

Its potential demise is part of a plan to transform the former Woolworths plot.

But pressure group #Ayr Deserves Better are objecting to the recommendation to knock down the building, which sits at numbers 8 to 10.

Former architect Patrick Lorimer said in a written submission that the group “regrets the proposed demolition of this historic building.”

He said: “Originally, the building was to be retained as one of two bookends to the site.”

Mr Lorimer has lodged comments as part of a consultation process and called for a rethink in a post-Covid era. He called for plans at the Riverside site to be halted.

The site is due to be completely transformed into public gardens looking over the river with affordable flats going up alongside another community building.

Architects Austin-Smith:Lord have produced designs for the area - and those included the removal of the 18th century tenement, which used to house Savers.

Ayrshire Architectural Heritage Trust and Kyle & Carrick Civic Society wanted the property to be opened up on the ground floor and to house social flats upstairs.

It is in poor condition and bits of rubble fell off last year - sparking the temporary closure of the High Street.

Members of the Fort Seafield and Wallacetown Community Council said they are still considering their submission to South Ayrshire council on the proposals.

Comments on the riverside transformation are due in no later than Monday, May 25.
