Tower block residents in the city centre hold sunset balcony party during coronavirus lockdown

This was the moment Manchester city centre residents lifted the mood of the coronavirus lockdown with a balcony party at sunset.

Residents in the Green Quarter tower blocks shared a moment of light relief as a Dj pumped out tunes to the entire area.

It prompted neighbours to step outside to have a dance with each other, even if it was from afar.

It comes as stringent measures remain in place to try and stop the spread of Covid-19.

No one is allowed to leave their home unless to buy food and medicine, exercise once a day, or for work if 'absolutely necessary'.

Being kept inside when living in high rise flats might be considered even more of a challenge.

But residents in the Green Quarter are a tight-knit community, having fought for several years for landlords to address dangerous cladding on the outside of their buildings in the wake of the Grenfell disaster.

Their battle has been partly won with work to remove the cladding from Vallea Court and Cypress Place almost complete.

A second balcony party is planned for Sunday afternoon with the resident DJ asking revellers to bring colourful scarves and flags to make the event even more fun.

One resident said: "I had been feeling down all day with the current situation then I heard the music from my window and before I knew it, I was joining in and dancing on my balcony.

"Gave me a real lift and shows what great community spirit we have here.”

Since the lockdown began, residents have been doing their best to help each other out.

Another told the M.E.N: "The whole Green Quarter community have really pulled together at this time we have volunteers doing shopping, we have jigsaw swaps (once-antibac’d) book swaps, people cooking for each other, online workouts and quizzes... and then we had the party!

"It makes us all very proud to live here."

A group has been set up to help people share what's going on in the Green Quarter community, find more information via @Sunday_At_10.
