Tower block partially closed in crackdown on crime

A court has partially closed a Barton Hill tower block for three months during an unprecedented crackdown on crime.

No unauthorised people will be able to use Beaufort House's stairwells, lifts, corridors, communal rooms, laundry rooms, bin rooms, green spaces and car parks until March.

Residents living in the troubled building have complained about anti-social behaviour - including drug dealing-  which they say has been plaguing their lives.

It's believed this is only the second time Avon and Somerset Constabulary has used the recently-enacted anti-social behaviour order powers in this way.

During the first case, two houses in BS5 - 17-storey Croydon House in Croydon Street, and nearby Lansdowne Court in Easton Road were shut.

The new ban means the Barton Hill block is now legally closed to anyone who isn’t a resident, a permitted guest of a resident or an authorised person - who could be any official from the council, the electricity board, fire brigade, ambulance and so on.

Anyone breaching the order could be arrested.

Police and the council worked together to bring the case to Bristol Magistrates Court.

ASB Coordinator Kate Matthews said: “This shows our commitment to protecting residents within the tower blocks from ASB.

"Obtaining this order is a really positive step in helping to make the community a safer place in which to live. We ask residents to continue to work with us by reporting ASB and any breaches of the order."
