Tow Law Town football club receives grant to fix crater in pitch after MP steps in to help

A County Durham football club has received a grant to improve their "unsafe" pitch which had a huge crater in it.

Tow Law Town Football Club obtained a Pitch Preparation Grant worth £1,500 which will go towards improving and sustaining the playing surface at the Ironworks Road ground.

It follows a letter sent by Richard Holden, MP for North West Durham, to Nigel Huddleston MP, the Minister for Sport in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport about getting funding support for clubs across County Durham.

In particular, he raised concerns about Tow Law Football Club, Consett Football Club and Crook Town Football Club which all have individual issues in their clubs.

This was part of wider work Richard was doing to give football clubs in North West Durham reassurance and clarity about the future following the measures implemented during the coronavirus.

Tow Law AFC was seriously affected by the emergence of a crater in the pitch which rendered it unusable as it is now extremely unsafe, especially and there were concerns that the hole would expand.

Now the MP received confirmation from Martin Glenn, Chairman of The Football Foundation, that Tow Law Football Club successfully obtained the much-needed grant.

Richard Holden, MP for North West Durham, said: "I am delighted that Tow Law AFC will be receiving a much-needed grant from The Football Foundation, and I’d like to thank those at The Football Foundation for looking into this.

"Local people have already raised over £6,000 to help the club and this funding will be a helpful boost to local efforts.

"The pitch at the Ironworks Road Ground is totally unsafe and unusable at the moment and is in desperate need of repair. This will give the club reassurance for the future of the ground and, most crucially, will ensure that the pitch is safe for all those that use it."
