Tours restart at Crannog Centre as staff rally after terrible fire

Despite a fire destroying its centrepiece exhibit, the Scottish Crannog Centre on Loch Tay reopened yesterday, offering guided tours of its on-shore living history village.

A week ago the loghouse burned down and support for the community of guides and archaeologists came from all over the UK in response.

The fire on Friday, June 11 did not affect the collection of wooden shelters housing tools and demonstration areas at the site in Kenmore which are going to continue to be available for visitors.

There is much to learn about how Iron Age residents of Loch Tay grew crops and harvested their food from the loch shore.

Metal making, leather work, wood turning and textile production were all part of daily life and tour guides can explain it to modern day visitors.

The tours will be led hourly and the price per person has been reduced.

A spokesperson for the Iron Age attraction said: “We are so grateful for everyone’s continued support and kindness at this time, and in light of this, we are working to reopen and keep sharing the stories of the Crannog community to as many people as possible.”

In a further effort to rise again, the ‘Crannog Craik’ music and storytelling event with renowned storyteller Claire Hewitt, was due to begin regular Thursday fixtures from 7pm-9pm last night.

Featuring live music and performances from local artists and storytellers each week, Crannog Craik will continue over the summer.

An appeal has raised over £30,000 in the days since the fire on June 11. The Crannog Centre is accepting tour bookings (cost is £5pp) and Crannog Craik bookings (£20pp), through the website www.crannog.co.uk
