Tourists warned to keep away from cliffs at one of Wales' most popular beaches due to landslips

A number of landslips have happened on a Swansea beach that attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The National Trust said people should stay away from the cliff edges at Rhossili Beach, Gower, especially while on the beach below.

There is no bedrock underneath the soft cliffs, so long periods of heavy rain can cause the soft land to slide.

As rain continues this February half term, the National Trust said it will be keeping a close eye on the situation at the beach, which regularly tops polls and was once named as one of the world's best beaches.

During relentless winter storms in 2014, the beauty spot saw a large landslip, causing a diversion on the footpath, as a large amount of earth fell towards the beach.

A National Trust spokesman said: "We are aware of numerous small slumps along the soft cliff face at Rhossili.

"After long periods of heavy rain we frequently experience landslips such as this due to the fields above, known as the Warren, lying on top of what is a glacial deposit from the last ice age.

"There is no bedrock beneath this material and we are advising visitors to the area to stay away from the soft cliff edges – particularly so from the beach below. We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation."
