A gastro-bar in Spain has stirred up some controversy due to an odd practice that they claim is commonplace for the region.
The Imperial Bar, which is in Benavente in the Zamora area of Spain, apparently charges customers each time that the waiter is called to their table.
The changes range from 20 cents but can be as much as one euro depending on what you are asking a waiter to do, according to one customer.
Spaniard Blas Galey, who was on holiday in Benavente, went to the bar and said he was shocked by the fee for every time that he needed the waiter, reports the Irish Mirror.
He was so irked that he left a review, saying: “Every time the waiter came to the terrace table to bring something - beer, the tapas - he charged us 20 cents.
“The last straw was the euro that he charged us to [bring] some cutlery to cut toast that we had ordered,” he continued.
In response to the online outrage at Galey’s review, the Imperial Bar claimed the additional charge was for every drink that was served rather than every time the waiter went to the table.
It added that it’s actually ‘common practice’ that most venues abide by, but that some places don’t explain where the surcharge comes from on the bill.
Since the bar went viral, hundreds of people have been leaving more reviews to reveal what has been going on at the bar, according to Olive Press.
One customer said: “They charged me for cutlery service and the amazing this we ordered several beers and they charged us 20 cents for each trip of the waiter to come and bring them.”
Another customer said: “It must have changed owners, now they charge you for each time a waiter serves you.”
The Imperial Bar owner responded once again to say: “the waiter charges for each service.
“Every time a drink is served to you on the terrace, it carries a surcharge of 20x perhaps it is easier to put a full price, but we believe that it is better you know what you pay and, we feel this is your appreciation.”
