Tourists shocked after paying €59 for one way train ticket and being forced to sit on floor

Tourists travelling from Dublin to Cork have been left shocked after paying €59 for a one way ticket and then being forced to sit on the floor.

Vilma Henriquez from Barcelona was travelling with friends from the Dominican Republic on the service from Heuston station to Cork earlier today.

The group booked their tickets at the station and were not given the option of reserving a seat on the service, reports Cork Beo .

Vilma said this is her third time visiting Ireland and she has never experienced something like this before.

She said: “It is awful that our holidays have started like this, we are in shock.

"I travel around Europe on a monthly basis and I have never experienced something like this before."

She added her friends, who are visiting the country for the first time, were also shocked having paid so much for their tickets.

An Irish Rail spokesman told Dublin Live: "We apologise to customers who experienced this.  The Dublin/Cork Intercity route is our busiest Intercity route, and has the most frequent service – hourly from 07.00hrs to 19.00hrs, and 21.00hrs Dublin to Cork - and most capacity as a result.  It would be unusual for this to occur.

"We are currently using all available Intercity carriages at the busiest times, but will continue to monitor demand across the network, to ensure we are matching demand with capacity within available resources."
