Tourists run for their lives as slithering 17ft python tries to attack jeep

Terrified wildlife tourists fled in terror after a 17ft python slithered under a trailer before trying to attack their jeep.

Footage shows several people taking pictures of the massive reptile as it sits underneath the vehicle on a dirt trail near the coastal city of Durban, South Africa.

One person tries to move the animal by grabbing its tail, but the python then slithers towards a white Land Rover before trying to mount the vehicle in an apparent attack.

One of the frightened tourists jumps into the motor while others flee on foot.

He tries to reverse away from the giant snake, an African rock python, which then follows the jeep.

As the car continues to retreat, the snake slithers after it briefly before turning towards the grass and moving away.

The African rock python is Africa's largest snake, Siyabona Africa reports.

Despite its huge size, it is non-venomous, but kills its prey by constriction.

Females are typically larger than males and have attacked humans in the past.

The species is in decline due to human hunting for their skin or meat.

They are mainly restricted to secluded areas, hunting reserves and parks.
